High-flying solutions

With the rules and regulations changing after this week’s happenings, we expect that travel plans – and the things we are buying for those trips- will no doubt be changing in coming weeks.

Just back from a whirlwind spin through White Plains, in search of items that we all might be turning to. My colleague Liz Johnson, our veteran food editor/writer and a most experienced traveler, came along.

Our first stop was “The Container Store”:http://containerstore.com, where we headed to the travel section. Here, we spotted quite a few things, starting with a nicely padded personal computer case for $19.99. Seems like an ideal solution for laptops that now have to be checked through.

We also liked the selection of locks, selling for under $15. Here’s one of them:

And for those who always buy more than they expect (you know who you are), the Baggallini zip-out shopping bag ($19.99) might be a smart investment. Tuck it into your luggage on the way out, fill it with souvenirs, use the above lock and your finds will make it home with you.

We had to smile at the wall filled with drink bottles – seems they won’t be carried on at this point in time.

Next, we hit “Brookstone”:http://brookstone.com. Our editor had told us about the combination locks, with big digits and straps (designed NOT to be cut off by security). Pick one at $15, in lime, blue, red or orange to spice things up.

Finally, we swooped to the basement of The City Center for “Target”:http://target.com. There, we especially liked two things. First was the pair of embark Spill-Proof Pouches ($9.99). With all that shampoo, toothpaste and the like now being checked through, these seem to offer ideal protection against leaks. Who wants to arrive and pull out a pretty blouse smeared with shower gel?

Then: the last find. Grudgingly we had to admit the workmanlike-looking document holder ($12) was practical – if less than stylish. Its string allows you to have your hands free (is that a concern anymore?)- and fill it with passport, ID, credit cards, money and the like.

Wanted to also snag a little sleeping pillow- after all the stress of those long lines, you’ll probably need one—but would it be let on the plane? Not so sure.

Well, that’s our quick survey of what you might be looking at. Share your travel tales- and shopping tips here. Safe travels!
