Buying a bit of history

March
12

I stopped by the Larchmont Antique & Collectibles Show Saturday morning, where dozens of dealers filled both the gym and adjacent hallway in Mamaroneck High School.

I wrote about the show for last Thursday’s paper — and it’s always been a personal favorite.

Still, I hadn’t intended to do a lot of shopping, but anyone who likes antiques and collectibles knows the rule — if you love it, buy it (since you might never get the chance again).

And I saw some things I liked quite a bit.

My jewelry collection grew a bit with this pin:

And I really loved the look — and the words — of this piece of sheet music (oh, I don’t play; I plan to frame it):

But the best thing I found was a handful of vintage postcards.

I spent a good while looking through the offerings, particularly those devoted to Rockland County.

And I was rewarded with finds like this:

Bear Mountain has always been a favorite place. Our family went there often when I was growing up, and I continue to go there year-round today.

Much in the way that vintage menus capture my imagination (I love the sound of the Victorian-era dishes and the elaborate approach to the proceedings) this card just made me smile.

Take a look at what was on offer at what had to have been considered a country retreat.

It all reminded me I need to get back up to Bear Mountain soon.

I’ll have to call and check the hours — but I’m willing to bet dialing “Stony Point 1” just won’t work these days!

Mary, I was at the show on Saturday as well. Picked up a couple of beauties. 2 metal flower pins from the 60’s and a couple of spacer bracelets which may or may not be bakelite. I love the pin you bought. I own the same one, picked it up at the big “all town” garage sale in Warrensburg, NY. Another fabulous place to find hidden beauties. I don’t know why that pin was not for sale in my shop, but you inspired me to find it and I will put it up soon. Thanks! BTW – would you disclose what you paid for it????

    Hi, Beth-
I love that show- sounds like you did well, too.
I wore the pin to work yesterday, so it’s already getting some time to shine.
    (And I will share – I paid $25).
    Best.
    Mary

    Mary,
Thanks so much for sharing what you paid; a very fair price. I have always done well at the Mam’k show. I love the type of vendors that show up. The beautiful day today has gotten me excited for Spring Tag Sales.
    Best,
    Beth
