Mary Shustack shops around

Best of both worlds

I still can’t believe how much time I spent outside this weekend — sure you did, too — and a good portion of my “fresh-air time” Saturday was spent shopping the Stormville flea market.

Talk about taking advantage of a beautiful day!

My sister and I headed out around 6 a.m. to beat the traffic and have our pick of parking spots:

I wasn’t looking for anything in particular, which meant lots of stopping to see what was on offer.

Soon into our visit, we realized the “quirky quotient” was in high gear.

Of course, you’ll always find the old favorites, the standbys, such as these:

But we saw a lot of things that I doubt you’d see anywhere else:

I didn’t go crazy buying (probably because I have a shopping excursion to Brimfield, Mass., later this week and then vacation soon after) — but I snagged a few things that I was pleased with.

Look at these pilgrims that stepped straight out of the 1970s:

I’ve been looking for pilgrims for the Thanksgiving table for awhile now — and admit, I was leaning toward the more serious — yet these, at $7 for the pair, will certainly add a kitschy touch to the holiday table.

And then, in the “new section, I picked up this Kenneth Cole clutch with a crackled metallic finish:

The $32 price tag still on it, it was just $5 (and yes, I did get more than one).

My sister, who collects vintage “knee-hugger” elves, found a few, including this guy for $3:

And, of course, we sampled that “local treat” — kettle corn:

A great way to cap our “day in the country” … and here are just a few more random shots from the day.

If you didn’t make it to Stormville this weekend, don’t despair — the season continues Oct. 6 and 7 before concluding Nov. 4 with the “Christmas in November edition. Visit the Web site for complete details, including directions (though it’s very easy to find).
