A bit of ‘Magic’

November
28

Do you remember (and still miss) That Old Black Magic, a longtime shop on Mamaroneck Avenue in White Plains?

If so, you’ll be pleased to hear that the woman behind it, award-winning jewelry designer Donna Chambers, is holding a holiday-shopping event at her design studio and gift gallery in Greenburgh.

Chambers is welcoming shoppers from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, this weekend through Dec. 15.

Just checked in with Chambers, who told me that she is offering all kinds of gift items, including calendars, Christmas and Kwanzaa cards and lots of jewelry, including her well-known black cameos.

The sale is at 5 Prospect Ave. For more details, call 914-287-0303.

Going POSH

November
28

If you like to take a midday shopping break, you’ll want to keep the new POSH Store in mind — especially if you like to combine bargain-hunting with some pretty sleek style.

The elegant White Plains shop, which opened earlier this month in the heart of the city, is already brimming with colorful sweaters, seasonal tops, pocketbooks, jewelry and even some home accessories.

If the name POSH sounds familiar, you may be thinking of the giant POSH Sale, held each year in Manhattan to benefit Lighthouse International. New and gently used designer clothes (and sometimes home furnishings) are sold to raise funds to support the nonprofit organization’s services.

Well, this space up here marks the group’s first year-round retail shop.

Lighthouse International, founded in 1905, has been in Westchester for more than 50 years — but if you’re not familiar with it, the organization is “dedicated to preserving vision and to providing critically needed health-care services to help people of all ages overcome the challenges of vision loss.

I wasn’t able to make it to the shop’s grand opening but finally had the chance to stop by on my way in this morning.

Jacob Artz, who’s been with Lighthouse for a number of years, heads up the shop as the POSH Retail operations manager.

So far, he says they’ve had some 500 visitors stop by in these early weeks. Impressive.

What they — and I — found is a really nice mix (in excellent shape) of coats, sweaters, jewelry, handbags and home accents, ranging from candleholders to trays.

There is a small men’s section, including some ties (that perennial gift item).

Artz told me that he’s had a great response from the local community, with many businesses and corporations already making donations. He mentioned places including Mary Jane Denzer, a fellow White Plains business, and Island Imports in Hawthorne (which you’ve read about here before).

He even showed me a crew-neck sweater, part of a donation from a local country club, that still had its $107.50 price tag on it. Here, you’ll pay $40.

Donations will keep the shop running. Artz would love to hear from companies, of course, but individual donations are also accepted from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays (other times by appointment). Call for details on what’s accepted, through generally they take clothing, accessories and small household items (no used shoes or large furniture, please).

Artz credits the shop’s many volunteers with keeping the place running smoothly.

There’s even a wish list, where shoppers can let the staff know if they’re looking for a particular item.

Plans include the creation of an in-house catalog, so that the merchandise not on the display floor can be “seen by potential shoppers. Artz also spoke about working with area students in fashion-related proejcts.

I didn’t really have time to shop today — but a Jones New York top did catch my eye as I was getting ready to leave, so I may be headed back there in coming days.

Let me know if you go — and what you buy.

The POSH Store is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays, with Thursday hours of 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

It’s within the Lighthouse’s Westchester office, at 170 Hamilton Ave. For more details, or to discuss donations, call Artz at 914-683-7554.

Fragile beauties

November
27

Back in October, I wrote a story about Scott Hegan.

He’s a California-based glass artist who grew up in Chappaqua. He was coming back to Westchester to exhibit in the Westchester Craft Show.

His work is incredible — check out his Web site.

Well, he has let me know that for the holiday season he has opened a “virtual gallery” through which the public can purchase his glass. It’s a part of his eBay shop, a year-round place where he sells supplies to other glassmakers.

Sounds like a pretty savvy plan.

And those in search of one-of-a-kind gifts might want to check it out.

Helping out

November
27

Shop and do something for a good cause at the same time… how nice is that?

I have heard about a new fund-raising effort by the Hendrick Hudson Lions Club that seems to be, as they say, a “win-win situation.”

Those who’d like to help out are asked to visit the Lions Club Web site and follow the link to Amazon.com.

The club then gets a portion of the purchase price back — at no extra cost to the consumer.

I had heard about this program before — pretty sure WFUV Radio has been doing it for quite awhile.

It sounds easy enough.
You get what you wanted — and the Lions club gets additional funds to continue its work in the Montrose, Buchanan, Peekskill, Cortlandt and Croton communities.

On the edge

Did you hear about the giant knife?

Turns out that Wenger, the company behind the Genuine Swiss Army Knife (with its North American headquarters based in Orangeburg) has earned quite a mention — a Guinness Book of World Record: World’s Most Multi-functional Penknife.

(Yes, it’s a brand-new category — but when you see the knife, you’ll agree it’s not like any other).

Wenger put more than 100 years of “Swiss quality craftsmanship” in the product, which features 87 implements offering more than 115 uses.

There’s a golf divot-repair tool, a 300-foot pointer, a cigar cutter, a fish scaler… and it goes on and on.

It’s impressive, sure, but not so sure about functional. It’s nearly 9 inches long and weighs three pounds.

Oh, and it costs $1,200.

Take a look:

Any takers?

One door closes…

November
27

I don’t like it when I hear of a shop closing, especially when it’s one that I’ve enjoyed visiting.

I heard from Patty Villanova this morning that she’s going to be closing her satellite — Side Effects/NY — in Carmel after Christmas.

I visited that shop back in April, after having written about the original store, in Peekskill, a few months before that.

Villanova told me it was just too tough to be, basically, in two places at the same time — perfectly understandable.

So, her leaving ends up giving holiday shoppers quite an opportunity. She’s holding a “Blowout Sale” in Carmel, with all merchandise (even the new stuff) marked down. Jewelry and bags, for example, are 15 percent off, while other markdowns range up to 40 percent.

Shop early, she says, for the best selection. The store, at 13 Fair St., is open Tuesdays through Saturdays (and by appointment).

Call 845-225-1006 or 845-528-9447 for more details.

And stay tuned since I’m planning to visit Villanova at her original location early in the new year, as she tells me she’s going to renovate and reorganize the spot at 1011 Brown St. (right opposite the Paramount Center for the Arts).

Right on Target

November
27

The Holiday 2007 press kit from Target is filled with options that just might end up on my shopping list.

Yes, I’m pretty close to being done with my gifts for others — but there are some things that might wind up on my own holiday table.

I just loved the look of these pieces, don’t you?

This is the Golden Holidays Tahari set, featuring a serving platter ($24.99), salad plates ($19.99 for four) and dinner plates ($24.99 for four):

This is the Golden Holidays gold hurricane ($19.99), filled with a set of gold pine cones ($7.99) and a set of two gold/sequin ornaments ($5.99):

And this was my favorite look — a black beaded damask tablerunner ($29.99) and charger ($14.99):

Might just have to stop by my local Target and check it all out.

Do the same — or shop online.

Pearl River’s the place

November
27

If you have a lot of shopping to do but the idea of heading to a mall after work is less than appealing, here’s one alternative.

Plan to visit Pearl River this Thursday, when the “Winter Shopping Spectacular” — love the sound of that — is held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The event will featuring shopping specials offered by participating shops — a dozen or more — along with raffles, refreshments and music.

There’s even an “after party” at Southbound Cafe, starting at 9:30.

The event, coordinated by All Around Town Errands and Events, will also be a fund-raiser. A portion of the night’s proceeds will benefit the Pearl River Beautification Fund.

For more details, contact Anne McGovern at 845-323-8851.

On the antiques front

November
27

Those who like to visit neighboring Greenwich, Conn., for its annual Antiquarius events may want to note the 50th Greenwich Antiques Show — a highlight of the themed week of events — will be held Friday through Sunday at the Greenwich Civic Center.

Other activities, from a preview party to a designer forum, a holiday boutique to a holiday house tour, are also planned.

For more details on all events, visit the Historical Society of the Town of Greenwich Web site.
