Sparkling it up

February
29

I’ve written a couple of times before about Walking on Roses, the flip-flop company that’s based in Mahopac.

Well, I’ve heard the company has just introduced a glittering new style.

“Party Girl” features one of the company’s trademark roses but this time, it’s surrounded by crystals.

Create your own look by choosing from the more than 40 (!) shades available, ranging from aqua to tangerine, iris to sage.

Sounds fun — check out the site for all the latest styles.

Something ‘About’ this shop

February
28

There are some shops that you visit time and time again, a bit of a routine.

You stop by every time you’re “in town.”

For residents of Montrose, that’s probably how it is when it comes to About Face of Westchester.

The boutique is on a little street right near the post office and a deli.

img_8238.jpg

For other shoppers, though, it’s more likely a destination.

But I have to say, I made the trip up there this morning — and I’m definitely going back.

It’s going to be our “Shop of the Week” for next Thursday… but I just wanted to give you a bit of a sneak peek if you’ve not been there before.

I had heard from a friend that it is a bit of “city” shopping up here. I’d have to agree.

There’s a lot of attitude here — and it’s decidedly feminine.

Step in the door to be hit with a burst of femininity. It’s the pink walls and the gilded mirrors, the velvet couches and the pocketbooks, the earrings and makeup:

That’s a quick look around. I have to say, I found the prices to be really fair (saw loads of earrings for less than $20 so you know I was happy!)

And here’s Patricia DiPaolo, one of the owners, who gave me a bit of a tour.

img_8235.jpg

She was also telling me the shop does makeup for customers, for special events and the like.

As I said, quite a destination.

Be sure to check out the story next week. Til then, feel free to stop by About Face of Westchester at 7 Kings Ferry Road. Call 914-736-7772.

Prep for the prom

February
27

Soon enough, prom season will be here.

If you know anyone shopping for her dress, there’s an event this weekend at the Palisades Center in West Nyack that might be of interest.

Camille La Vie, is teaming up with Seventeen magazine and New York’s Z-100 Radio to present a “Prom Queen Search.”

The event will include a fashion show of this season’s “hottest” gowns, along with presentations on fashion and beauty.

There will be “mini-makeovers” and even the chance to walk a runway and “get discovered” by the magazine.

One local winner will win the prom gown of her choice and have her look photographed for a feature on the magazine’s Web site. There are plenty of other prizes, as well.
Here are just a couple of the fashions, sent from Camille La Vie, that will be in the spotlight:

The festivities will run from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Camille La Vie store on the mall’s first floor.

For complete details, visit the store’s Web site.

Made by hand

February
25

I bought something very unusual this past weekend.

It was admission to a crafts (gasp!) class.

Those who know me know that when it comes to crafts, I’d most often beg off.

More and more, though, I find myself drawn to things that are made by hand.

I’ve made a few humble attempts at crafts — but it’s always been very informal. A card here. A gift tag there.

But since I love all things vintage, I have long wished I could do something with, as my British friend would say, the “bits and bobs” that I pick up in my travels.

Well, this Saturday, I found myself perched on a stool creating my own jewelry for more than three hours.

And I loved it!

I took a class at Tinsel Trading Company, which is in the Garment District in Manhattan. If you like vintage, you’ll want to shop here. It’s filled with all kinds of ribbons and flowers, ephemera and gift items. I stop by every so often and when I heard about the class decided it was time to “take the plunge.”

The class was actually at its satellite, The Store Across the Street, which is…. yes, you get it.

Anyway, a very creative (and patient) teacher named Robin Beam of Ranger Ink led nearly 10 of us in all kinds of creations during “Memory Glass Magic.”

Here are just a couple of the things I (!!) made.

img_8192.jpg

img_8193.jpg

Of course, these are the works of a beginner.

And I’m certainly not saying I’ll only be wearing jewelry I make myself from now on.

Oh, no.

But you never know, you just might see me at my local Michael’s more often.

Have to buy more supplies after all.

Coming (kind of) soon

February
21

I got my first “official” press materials today from Artrider Productions, the organization that puts on a number of craft events in our region.

The next edition of Crafts at Lyndhurst will be held May 2 to 4 in Tarrytown. Once again, there will be some 300 artists showing off their creations ranging from jewelry to furniture, home accessories to fine art.

Here’s a glimpse of what will be on offer.

This is a gold Art Nouveau bracelet by Rosario Chacon:

Here is a handbuilt, ceramic “Oriental Pocketbook” by Gail Markiewicz:

And the “Walk Around the Garden” bracelet from Tami Rodrig:

And while they say a snow storm is on the way… look ahead to warmer days, when you can wander around Lyndhurst like these past shoppers:

I’m looking forward to hearing more about the show, especially details on our local exhibitors.

Of course, I’ll be passing all that along in stories or blog postings, so stay tuned.

For complete details, visit the show site, linked above.

Making weekend plans

February
20

Those who like to spend time poking around antiques shops have another option this weekend.

The 38th annual Bedford Hills Antiques Show is being held at Fox Lane High School, on Route 172 in Bedford.

Promoter Martin Greenstein says the venue has wrapped up a construction project that’s allowed him to bring in even more dealers than usual.

Expect more than 50 this time around, and they’ll be showing everything from jewelry to silver to period furniture.

The show will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The admission is $10.

For more details, call 914-572-4132.

A taste of spring

February
19

Today just doesn’t seem as cold as I thought it would be.

I even found myself thinking about spring as I drove in to work.

It was a case of “perfect timing” since later in the morning, I had to pop down to Larchmont.

I wanted to stop by Decoration Day.

img_8161.jpg

As I’ve been saying, we’ve begun this new “shop of the week” feature. This Thursday, as I’ve mentioned, I’m putting a spotlight on Awakenings in Katonah.

For next week, I’m going to feature Decoration Day. It’s been in the same spot for more than 20 years, owned by Susan Celestino. Her daughter Amanda, who also works there, gave me a little tour.

Even though I hadn’t been there in a bit, I was pretty familiar with what the shop features, especially its custom silk and dried-flower arrangements.

Still, I was surprised at just how lovely this one was, which made me want spring even more:

img_8153.jpg

Here’s a quick look around the rest of the shop, which is filled with lamps and pillows, linens and soaps, jewelry and all kinds of lovely home accents:

Check the paper and LoHud.com next Thursday for this piece — or stop by Decoration Day, at 2076 Boston Post Road (914-834-9252), before then and see it all for yourself.

Kind of true…

February
18

I was out walking with one of my sisters over the weekend, and she was telling me how someone she knows just got another designer bag.

She said the women she works with started talking about bags — who’s had the same one for three years, who has a few… who has quite a few.

I guess I’d fall into that last category.

I do like to switch bags, often.

The last one I got, a Nine West satchel — on a great sale — at their “outlet” shop in Spring Valley had this little phrase embroidered over one of the inside pockets…

9westbag.jpg

I don’t think I’m that bad… but it sure made me laugh.
