Mary Shustack shops around

Trash or treasure

March

Time flies, as they say.

I just looked into our archives to see when it was that I interviewed Sue Whitney and Ki Nassauer, and it was back in 2005.

The Minnesota-based ladies — who have made a name (“Junkmasters”) for themselves by repurposing what they delightfully call junk — were coming to Manhattan to participate in “Be Creative! New York.”

The Central Park event from County Home magazine was a day filled with seminars and demonstrations from “lifestyle experts” that also included Rachel Ashwell and Katie Brown.

It was all devoted to exploring style, both personal and in home decorating.

I had spoken to Whitney and Nassauer, who continue to produce pieces for Country Home that promote their “Junkmarket Style,” to advance the day.

They were great fun to talk to, and I ended up shopping (surprise, surprise) from their booth at the event.

I got this bracelet, which pretty much sums up their approach — it’s vintage flatware, recycled.

So, that’s your background — and here’s the latest on the junking front.

Whitney is coming back to Manhattan — tomorrow — to promote the pair’s new book, “Junk Beautiful” (The Taunton Press, $21.95):

The latest is filled with all kinds of projects that turn objects ranging from chicken feeders to tambourines into functional, stylish pieces for the home.

The author will be at the Hell’s Kitchen Flea Market from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a presentation planned for noon.

The market runs every Saturday and Sunday on 39th Street, between Ninth and 10th avenues.

I’ve not been yet this year. Let me know if you’ve been and how it’s doing – and if you go tomorrow, if you come away with any new… junk!
