I don’t usually go away for Memorial Day weekend.
It’s more of a stay-home-and-grill event, though I usually manage to make it up to the Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market.
But if you’re going to be a houseguest over the long weekend, you’ll probably want to consider a hostess gift.
I was up at Lifestyles & Interiors by Lisa in Croton-on-Hudson a few days ago, getting owner Lisa McTernan’s suggestions for hostess gifts. She had so many, as I knew she would.
You’ll see a story about the shop this Thursday in our Life & Style section (and here on LoHud.com) — Lifestyles & Interiors by Lisa is the shop of the week.
But I did want to give you a jump on your shopping in case you’re making an early getaway (and also because I have the time today; I’m out on assignment tomorrow).
So… here we go.
The shop, you may know, celebrated its second anniversary in March.
McTernan, a veteran interior designer, created an airy, welcoming space that combines furniture and home accessories with gifts, fashion and jewelry. She also maintains her own design studio at the rear of the shop.
Here’s a bit of an overview of the space, just touching on the variety that’s on offer:

Really lovely, don’t you think?
Well, after admiring how much the shop has grown since my last visit, I got down to business —focusing in on potential hostess gifts.
Here are a few.
First up, you don’t have to spend a lot of money to make a big impression. Need proof? McTernan showed me this little etched vase —$9 — that you could easily fill with wildflowers.

And this wicker wine carrier, just $28:

There are so many other ideas.
Make sangria and let your host or hostess keep the pretty pitcher:

Give them gourmet salts and something to serve them in:

For a man, opt for this decidedly masculine horn-handled set of a bottle opener and corkscrew ($38 for the pair):

Buy a book and present it with this magnifying glass. Doesn’t it look so classic?

You can even buy a bunch of these little shells ($10 each). They open up, and as McTernan says, you can use them to slip in a “thank-you” note after the party’s over.

That should get you started on the ideas front…
Check out the shop to see all this — and more. It’s at 33 N. Riverside Ave. Call 914-862-4163.
