Mary Shustack shops around

Oh, baby

June
6

By nature, it’s exciting to shop for a baby.

There’s that whole sense of a new life, endless possibilities and all that.

Besides, the stuff is just really cute and tiny.

There’s plenty to choose from at Cici Crib in Armonk, whether you’re looking for that one adorable gift — or to decorate an entire room.

I spent some time there yesterday, poking around the tiny treasures and talking with owner Christina Doherty. (Some technical problems held up the blog posting; sorry for the delay).

She had a smaller — 200 square-feet-small — version of the boutique, also in Armonk, for two years before moving into her Main Street space in mid-April.

The first shop, she says, proved a good “learning curve” for her, to find out what customers were looking for.

Now, she’s ready for the big(ger) time.

The fun gets under way before you even enter the Cici Crib, which will be my “shop of the week” for next week:

(The shop name, by the way, is a play on Doherty’s initials — her first name and maiden name — “CI.”)

Doherty’s card says the shop features “gifts and decor, new and vintage.”

That’s, of course, the basic description. It’s in the choices Doherty brings to her customers that makes Cici Crib stand out.

First up, here’s a bit of an overview, to give you a feel for the space.

At some 750 square feet, it’s allowed Doherty to do so much more than she did in her first, what she likes to call “starter,” store.

She’s been able to expand her offerings, going from just babies to include children and to also have room to display bedroom and crib vignettes, for example.

Throughout the process, Doherty says, she hopes to showcase new items “but also to keep what I love, and that’s where I hope it takes off.”

Thinks she’s got a good start on that front…

This hand-made mosaic mirror ($300) is a piece that will “grow” with a child, something you could see in an infant’s room just as easily as a teen’s:

While there are plenty of Shabby Chic-inspired items, the shop doesn’t dwell on one particular style:

The hand-painted banner comes in several styles; the hand-painted stool is $60:

As you can see, Doherty has a flair for design — and merchandise. What I think I like best is the way she weaves in vintage elements — of course, you knew that would catch my attention.

But even within the “vintage range,” Doherty’s eye is evident. Just look at a few of these great finds she’s offering today’s shoppers.

A big fan of flea markets, estate sales and antiques shows, Doherty is always on the hunt for vintage goods. She has a collection of planters from the 1930s through the ‘50s that she turns into one-of-a-kind gifts ($65).

She fills them with a handmade Swiss baby comb, an organic-cotton bib or washcloth and a “sweet and ultra-soft” cloth rattle:

There area also all kinds of vintage toys, which in their simplicity also make great decorative accents.

Vintage silver baby accessories are another specialty:

Also on the gift end, choices include things such as dolls, clothing, utensils, photo albums, etc.

These cute little monkeys range from $9 to $22:

These Little Packrats backpacks are so different, aren’t they?

The “famous” Trumpette baby socks are $24 for a box of six:

Utensil sets range from $17 to $36.50:

Doherty, a White Plains resident, ended up in Armonk after coming up to the area to play tennis and deciding it was a good place for her new business.

The longtime CPA, who was a stay-at-home mom with her two sons (now 14 and 11), has tapped into a real growing market, offering clothing made out of organic cotton and organic furniture (crafted with eco-friendly woods and paint).

“That, for sure, has taken off, the whole idea of beautiful organic but not ‘hard,’” she says.

Reflecting on the time she and her family lived in Europe, Doherty says it brought her an even greater appreciation for fine, sophisticated bedding.

And although the bedding from Serena & Lily ($49 to $149), Doherty’s core collection, is American-made, she says it has that European sensibility to it.

And there are some pieces that are truly of heirloom quality, such as this hand-crafted keepsake box made in Italy. I just loved its delicate look but at $475, Doherty says that indeed it will take a “special customer” to appreciate its value:

Then, there’s the Venetian-glass chandelier ($1,040) that I just fell in love with:

It’s just too beautiful…

I could go on and on…

Doherty says “It’s always a search, it really is, to find something no one else carries.”

Need one more example? Bet this guy will make you smile:

I’ve been and remain a loval fan of Madelynrose in Pearl River which may be more clothes and less small furniture, but this review leaves intrigued and I may have to venture over to Armonk. You do great work Mary!
