City style — New York and New Rochelle

June

You’ve got to admire a boutique that manages to combine “city chic” with low-key comfort.

That’s what I was thinking when I visited The Clothesline in New Rochelle yesterday.

It’s all brick walls, hardwood floors and trendy clothing — but right in the back, outside the dressing rooms, is a giant zebra-printed ottoman that you know is a place girls hang out when they’re trying on the latest styles.

I’ve worked with owner Gina Nardella a little before — posting sale tips here on the blog and all, but hadn’t met her til now, when I paid a visit for the “Shop of the Week” feature:

The shop, as you saw from the first picture, is in the middle of a stretch of North Avenue. A lively window display gives a sense of the fashions inside but only hints at the interior’s style.

Even though it’s 800 square feet, it feels much bigger thanks to the airy layout, designed and built by Nardella’s husband, Louis, who’s a contractor:

The shop opened in March of 2007 — and Nardella, “born and raised” and still living in New Rochelle, continues to fine-tune her offerings, expanding both choices and price points to reach a wider audience.

“I realized that because I’m the only store around, I need to hit everybody,” she says.

Indeed, The Clothesline is the kind of place where you can buy a little goldtone bracelet for $15 or a fancy necklace for around $150.

Just look at this really cute coat:

It’s from BB Dakota, and I said to Nardella, who agreed, that I could easily see it on a young girl… or myself. And at $50, I have to say I was really surprised.

Fashions from Hard Tail are the best sellers here — the company’s yoga pants start at $49 — along with jeans from companies including Red Engine and True Religion and those ever-popular flip-flops from Havaianas ($16 to $24).

For those who like a summer dress, there are plenty of choices, including a sleeveless design that’s a Mod mix of orange, pale green and cream ($45). Other dresses range up to $200.

Here’s an overview of the styles featured right now:

There are also plenty of options when it comes to gifts. I loved the look of this weekender ($56.25) from Murval, a company whose accessories I’ve always found both stylish and really durable:

There’s also a whole section devoted to items such as jewelry holders, trinket trays ($9), cosmetic bags and the like:

Nardella says no matter the time of year, she always keeps a sale-rack full — and regulars are invited to sign up for her newsletter. Every six to eight weeks, they receive discount cards with special offers.

Certain items, she also notes, are sold to benefit the Wings of Hope Justin Samela-Miceli Foundation, a local organization named in honor of a young New Rochelle man killed in a 2007 car accident.

The Clothesline is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays.

Nardella adds that she also hosts private parties, where groups (minimum of five people) can come after hours to enjoy cheese and crackers and special discounts.

The shop’s at 1291 North Ave. Call 914-813-8677.
