Going to the dogs

I never thought I’d know this, but I can tell you where to find an organic dog treat in the shape of a cannoli.

And Canine Couture Dog Spa & Boutique in Somers is also the place to discover a “Furcedes” car-shaped bed:

and sturdy silver dog tags in crown, bone or heart designs:

Those are just a few of the things that fill the shop that marks its third anniversary in September. (I’m featuring Canine Couture as the Shop of the Week next week).
Owner Charmaine McCleave says it was one simple thing that brought her to this business: “my love of dogs.”
And that love is clear, whether McCleave is showing off hand-painted ceramic dog bowls from Portugal and hand-knit dog sweaters

— or corralling her own standard poodles, Blaze and Elvis, for breakfast.
McCleave used to work at the Somers Animal Hospital but says she wanted to run her own business. In 2004, she began a mobile grooming service that grew into the spa and boutique.
“The grooming’s always been my ‘bread and butter,’” she says. The retail end of the operation, though, is where she gets to indulge.
“I vicariously shop through the business,” McCleave says. She attends plenty of trade shows to keep up on what’s new and different.
Shelves are filled with bags and dog beds

collars

bowls

and even dog clothing.

How about a little sweatshirt with a soccer design?

And dog owners can pick up some things for themselves, too.
There are cutting boards (from $50), chargers, serving bowls and cookie jars featuring different breeds, along with needlepoint pillows, T-shirts and jackets, too.

Quite a lot, right? And if you’re a dog lover, I’m sure you’ll want to check the place out.
Keep in mind the shop is set back off the road a bit — here’s what you’ll be looking for:
