Mary Shustack shops around

A fitting name

There’s one thing to keep in mind when you visit The Eclectic Collector in Katonah — plan to spend some time.

This shop, filled with contemporary arts and crafts from more than 400 artists, isn’t one to rush in and out of.

I suppose you could you could pop in for a quick gift but to really appreciate what Ellie Kimelman is doing at her 14-year-old shop, you have to slow down.

I was reminded of this fact when I visited earlier this week. I knew I was going back for a bit of an update, to feature The Eclectic Collector at my next “shop of the week.”

Before I knew it, I had been there well over an hour.

And that’s not a complaint.

I chatted a bit with Kimelman, between customers, who again told me she’s “always looking for new people.”

That’s how she keeps things fresh, she says. Sure, she may have customers who collect the work of a particular artist, but she wants those customers to always feel they are seeing what’s new, too.

It’s how she’s built her gallery.

“I just continued to put things in here that I really love, and I think are well-crafted,” she says.

Most of the artists are from America; others are found on Kimelman’s travels, such as a recent trip to Australia that led to some Aboriginal paintings that now dot the walls.

Overall, the shop is filled with creations in glass, wearable art, jewelry, ceramics, wood, folk art, sculpture, Judaica, journals and other paper arts and more.

Here’s a quick look around:

You can find a photo album or a fairy.

You can even commission a stained-glass box, personalized with an invitation (wedding, bat mitzvah, etc.), starting at $135:

You can spend $10 on a hand-crafted bookmark:

Or upwards of four figures on sculptures by artists such as Reina Mia Brill of City Island, whose signature works include these figures:

Local artists are featured, as well, from glass by David Licata of White Plains:

to ceramics from Marlene Ferrell Parillo of Somers, such as this “Emergency Chocolate Jar:”

to framed poetry from Terah Cox of Cold Spring:

And if that’s not enough, these items will give you an idea that Kimelman’s also a dog lover.

These wooden pieces are new, from Vermont:

And these are dog-themed tiles:

And these little guys, Winnie and Okie, are not only her beloved pugs but also the shop’s mascots:

Stop by the gallery — and remember what Kimelman says:

“It’s the kind of gallery you need to experience. You cannot come in here with five minutes.”

Trunk shows and special open houses are held throughout the year; I put notices here on the blog when I hear from Kimelman, so stay tuned.

The Eclectic Collector is at 215 Katonah Ave., in Katonah. Visit the Web site, linked above, or call 914-232-8700.
