Mary Shustack shops around

A welcome change

June

Every so often, I have a shopping experience that just makes me feel good.

This is about one of those times…

See, I was in Nyack on Thursday morning to visit a shop for my backyard-party story. After I had interviewed the owner of the Saffron Trading Company on South Broadway, I was rushing back to my car to get over to Larchmont.

I did, however, stop short when I saw this great bag in the window of Grandview.

Just loved it, but it was so hot and I was so watching the clock that I tried to put it out of my mind.

Well, that didn’t work very well and on Friday, I found myself calling Grandview to ask how late they were open and if the red bag they’d had in the window was still around.

I was told yes — and they close at 6 p.m.

What the woman said next took me totally by surprise: “If you’re running late, give us a call. We’ll wait for you.”

Now, I’m not a customer there — I’ve always admired the boutique’s clothing and accessories but most of my past visits have been more of the browsing kind.

I didn’t ask for the bag to be put on hold. Since I’m not a regular customer, I felt weird doing that – especially since I had no idea of the price, if I was really going to get there or if I did, would I actually get it (though I had an idea…).

Anyway, I was able to get there before closing on Friday afternoon.

The bag was not in the window — oh, my — but I quickly saw they had moved all the bags inside as a new window display was being created.

I did see it hanging nicely against the brick wall.

Well, I took it down, looked at it in the mirror and went to pay my $80.

The woman at the counter looked at me, a bit nervously.. and asked if I was the one who called.

I said yes — and she seemed relieved. She said she watched me and thought that maybe I just saw it, and whoever had called would come in later and be disappointed.

I said it was me, I hadn’t asked to hold it — but was so glad it was here.

And it was great.

It’s a Big Buddha bag (my second from this brand… my other Big Buddha purchase was also a spotted-in-the-window thing, too, come to think of it) and I just love it.

I used it all day Saturday in the city — it was perfect size, weight, etc. — and it’s with me again today.

Nice bag.

Nice shopping experience, and now I know I’ll be going back to Grandview again.

Grandview is at 11 S. Broadway in Nyack. Call 845-353-4189.
