Mary Shustack shops around

Making a splash

July
2

It’s been such a busy day… when is that holiday again?

Well, before I head for home, I just wanted to post about Sassafras, N.Y., a Brewster shop that I visited yesterday afternoon.

Once I get going — and when you see how many pictures I’m going to put up — you’ll see why I didn’t get to it earlier.

It’s going to be my “Shop of the Week” for July 10, but I just wanted to tell you about it now, as well.

Sassafras, N.Y. is a children’s boutique, one where you’ll find clothes and games and dolls for kids.

But the shop is also a place where moms can pick up a necklace for themselves, a nightgown or even a treat from a line of olive oil-based creams and soaps.

In other words, it’s a great place for the multitasker.

And even better, it’s perfect for those who drop their children off at the Wings Over Water School of Swimming right next door.

The school, opened by Edie Flood back in 2001, had always offered a bit of retail, but it was more of the strictly functional kind (think bathing caps and goggles).

Now, there’s a colorful preview of Sassafras N.Y. within its lobby area.

And it’s a natural cross-promotion, since Sassafras, N.Y. is more than a little connected to the swimming school.

The boutique is also owned by Flood, with her sister, Patty Malan happily serving as its buyer.

Flood had the chance to do something with the vacant space next to her school.

“The first call I made was to my sister because that’s something that she loves,” Flood says.

And Malan’s selections — found at trade shows and on various travels and showcased in a playful-meets-sophisticated setting — reflects that enthusiasm.

“We’ve had fun with this,” Malan says.

For now, the shop has an almost built-in audience.

“It’s great being right next door,” Flood says. “For now, the most traffic that we get is from Wings.”

But a quick look around and you’ll see its appeal will likely go beyond that.

The shop, which opened in early May, has most all categories represented. The clothing is mostly for infants and younger children, though there are some pretty trendy tops (for tweens and teens) being introduced.

Here’s just a quick look at some of the clothing choices, starting with this dress that was just too pretty to believe:

Here’s another:

And one of the various little pink numbers from Toni Tierney ($46):

Then there was this five-piece suit for a young man, complete with vest and necktie — all for $45.

“Even if they only wear it for an hour, it’s worth it,” Flood says.

But the shop has much more than fancy dress clothes for the little ones.

How cute is this little terry robe? Use it at the pool, at the beach or after the bath:

And this little suit from the Deep Blue Sea collection from le top just screams summer:

Here are a few more options:

This one is not only pretty for a girl — she gets a matching dress (complete with strawberry-watermelon-and-flower design) for her doll, too:

The shop is also filled with toys and games for kids, making it a great source for gifts.

The “My Little Sandbox” kits ($27) do very well:

There are also stuffed animals and all kinds of books and albums and dolls:

I loved this one, the Snuggle Pod Lil’ Peanut doll, designed to be a baby’s first:

There are also more decorative picks, such as this mirror:

and clock:

The shop, as I mentioned, has a nice selection of items for women, from 100-percent cotton nightgowns to soaps and creams from Olivella to jewelry… lots of costume jewelry (with some earrings at $12 and necklaces at $20):

Here’s a picture of the ladies behind Sassafras N.Y. — from left, Malan, Flood and store manager Sue Greer (who even designed the lovely wooden display case that takes up nearly one full wall):

That cutie in the middle is Flood’s dog — Sassafras — so now you know where the shop’s name came from.

And one last thing — pick up the business card, and you’ll see it carries the slogan “for sassy kids.”

Need proof? Check out these choices:
