Backyard time

This holiday weekend is about parties.

It could be a barbecue (mine’s tomorrow). Might just be a picnic or some cocktails.

No matter, entertaining at home is what a lot of people will likely be doing over the next few days.

That’s why I wrote a story for today’s Life & Style section of The Journal News — and also here on LoHud.com — that offers ideas of items you might want to have on hand.

I had a ball searching for the things to feature, from plates to cocktail mixes, seating to napkins.

I tried to include a variety of prices, a variety of styles. Some are just fun. Others are functional, but with flair, of course.

Check out the story — but here are a couple more finds that didn’t make it to the final edition (in fairness, we only featured one item per shop).

As I posted last week, I was deciding between two pretty cool things at Saffron Trading Company in Nyack.

Now you know which one won out…

But other things I found along the way included these really fun tumblers from the Charles Department Store in Katonah (click through for the store’s Web site or check the story for full contact info. on the shops):

The Tervis tumblers come in various sizes, 12 to 24 ounces, I think it was, and feature patterns ranging from flip-flops to fish to American flags. They are perfect for outdoors, insulated to keep the drinks cool — and they won’t “sweat.”

Also a lovely choice, but not used in the story —a selection of Hudson Beach Glass, found at Fairground Attraction in Mount Kisco.

I thought it was gorgeous and had a real “natural” feel — the creations from this Beacon, N.Y., studio are always so stunning — but since the story was focusing on outdoor entertaining, I kept away from breakables… is it just me who’s a major klutz?

Finally, I just loved the look of this paper napkin-and-holder set.

It’s one of many found at Marmalade in Chappaqua, with the sets ($42) including the box, “weight” (this one was a silvertone boat) and package of napkins.

This one was my favorite — anything to do the water… on the water, in the water… summer!

So, those are a few of the things I didn’t have room to feature otherwise but still wanted to pass along.

Hope you find a couple worth buying yourself.

Enjoy the holiday. Enjoy the weekend. Catch up with you on Monday, if not sooner.
