Crazy for plum bags

October
13

No one likes working on a holiday, when it seems like the rest of the world is off.

But I managed to make the most of this Columbus Day with a little field trip to Island Imports earlier today.

I was again welcomed to the Hawthorne headquarters of this local wholesale fashion accessories company —which includes the Christian Livingston Collection and Island Designs by Harry Haslett — for a sneak peek of their next warehouse sale, which gets under way Thursday.

And when I pushed open the door, I was greeted by a scene that made my heart race (What can I say? I love a great bag).

Take a look at these ones — spot-on style in this season’s “it” color.

And whether you call it plum, lavender, eggplant — or just plain purple — you are going to be loving the shade in its various styles here.

Just twice a year (also in April), Island opens its doors for shoppers to find bargains in bags and jewelry, scarves and even a random sarong.

Nothing is more than $25; plenty of things are $5, $10… you get the idea.

As much fun as it is to check out all the styles — as a veteran of the last few years of shows, I have to say this was one of the “strongest” selections I’ve seen — it’s just as great to catch up with the people who run the company, namely designer Harry Haslett and Henrietta Porter, who’s in charge of the warehouse and just happens to be Haslett’s mother.

Here they are, showing off some scarves they’ve gotten in just for the sale:

The sale will feature all kinds of bags, in textures, prints and solid hues. There are fold-over clutches that become small totes. Bags with detachable chains. Just take a look, even more exciting one you realize the prices:

See what I mean about selection? And check out the prices:

There’s also plenty of jewelry. I’m going to let you just take a look. Again, nothing more than $15.

So… there you have the preview — bet you’ll be making plans to go, right?

As Haslett said, after giving me the scoop on what styles are selling, an outlook on the market — and just how many styles are on display here — “That’s the beauty of fashion. It keeps you interested.”

The Island sale runs from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Thursday and Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

It’s on again next weekend, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 23 and 24 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 25.

The company’s at 5F W. Cross St., right off the second Hawthorne exit when going north on the Sprain; or via Route 141 off Route 9A.
