Coming home to style

November
25

It’s something Tanya Scott has gotten used to since opening The Powderoom in June.

Time after time, customers tell her they had no idea her shop — a burst of sophisticated style within a straightforward storefront — had joined the retail mix of Pelham’s main drag.

But once they come in, it’s a pretty good bet they’ll remember the destination for women’s clothing and accessories.

First, they’ll be caught up in the shop’s chic interior — think hot pink walls, brown accents, hardwood floors and framed black-and-white pictures of iconic women, from Audrey Hepburn to Eartha Kitt to Raquel Welch.

A long brown carpet (trimmed in pink) almost guides the shopper inside, while giving a fashion runway feel.

Then, they’ll take a closer look at the offerings, from tailored pants to fitted blazers to jackets and dresses.

All are what Scott likes to call “timeless but still really fashionable.”

There are plenty of bags, scarves and jewelry, too:

Throughout, you sense a real attention to detail —

from the fact that Scott designed that display case/counter above to how she hand-painted the animal-print dressing-room walls:

Then, there’s the sharp line of a belt on a classic “little black dress:”

to the cuff on this classic white blouse, another staple Scott says every woman should have:

Scott is even introducing some of her own designs and was wearing one of her own skirts, below, when I visited.

Finally, they’ll see the prices — and likely be surprised, in a good way.

“It’s not about designer labels or pricey designer labels,” Scott says. “It’s all about style.”

Most everything here is $160 or less, save for the evening gowns which top out at around $250. (But check out the bugle beads on this style, at $225).

A belted wool-blend jacket, for example, is $69, while all of the jeans are $70 or less.

Scott’s connections in the fashion industry have allowed her to snag some pretty great deals, which she passes along.

Scott attended the Fashion Institute of Technology and worked in the menswear industry, styling for magazines and working with models for their portfolios.

Having her own shop was always a goal.

“I’d been dreaming about this forever. I mean forever,” she says.

Scott, who grew up in the city but has lived in Mount Vernon the past 10 years, even had the details down in her mind — a bonus when the space became available and she had to renovate, decorate, stock and open the shop within a two-month timeframe.

She had been keeping an eye on the space that became her shop for a long time, first spotting it about nine years ago when a friend moved to Pelham.

“I got to this block, and I was like this is my home. I need to be here.”

Now quite settled in, Scott says she’s found that one of the most rewarding parts of her job is working with customers to find their own look.

“I love encouraging self-esteem,” she says. “It’s not about our height or our weight… work with what you have.”

Sounds like a good plan.

Before I left the shop, Scott was sharing her motto, which is also found on her business card — “Well Dressed Days Are the Best Days.”

Have one yourself with a visit to The Powderoom and be sure to say hello to Scott:

I’ll remind you closer to the event, but The Powderoom is participating in a few of the themed events in Pelham this holiday-shopping season.

Stop in on Dec. 13 and 20 and you’ll be able to “pick your own” discount, pulling out a paper from a box that will tell you what percentage (10? 20?) you’ll save off your purchase. Fun!

The Powderoom is at 136 Fifth Ave., with regular hours of 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. It’s open Sundays by appointment.

Call 914-740-7855.

Hope you enjoyed my visit to The Powderoom. A version of this posting will appear in Life & Style section (and here on LoHud.com) on Monday as my Shop of the Week feature continues.

Thank you for the great colour scheme; when googling “pink walls” for design inspiration for my livingroom, i came across your site.
