Knitting away

November
25

If scoring some hand-crafted goods is on your agenda for holiday shopping, you might want to stop by the White Plains Hospital Center on select dates in December.

I got a call from a member of a group called The Knit Wits, which creates all kinds of knitwear items, from hats to gloves, blankets to baby goods.

The volunteer group makes these items, and then sells them in the hospital lobby.

Proceeds are then donated to support various programs at the hospital.

The sale is slated from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and then again on Dec. 9, 12 and 17.

The hospital is at 41 East Post Road (at Davis Avenue).

For more details, call 914-681-1225.

Coming home to style

November
25

It’s something Tanya Scott has gotten used to since opening The Powderoom in June.

Time after time, customers tell her they had no idea her shop — a burst of sophisticated style within a straightforward storefront — had joined the retail mix of Pelham’s main drag.

But once they come in, it’s a pretty good bet they’ll remember the destination for women’s clothing and accessories.

Getting the word out

November
20

I’ve heard of advertising your business on local cable, but I have to admit, this was a new one to me.

I’ve just watched the new “commercial” for The M Shoppe in Nyack, as posted on You Tube.

Darryl Jones’ shop gets the full treatment in the short segment — check it out by clicking here.

Next time you stop by (at 92 Main St.) to browse among the men’s accessories, fashions and gift ideas, you can tell Jones you saw the promo.

Have you heard of other local shops doing this?

Sorry to see it go…

November

Every time I pay a visit to do my Shop of the Week feature, I get to spend some time poking around a place, asking a lot of questions and really getting a feel for what it’s all about.

If you follow the feature, I hope you’re enjoying the places I find — and pass along.

It was back in the summer when I first stopped by Treasured Possessions, having waited for the shop to complete its move from another location still within Nyack and open its doors on a new space.
