Mary Shustack shops around

On the move

February
20

I’m working on a story to run in a few weeks about shops that have had to move, for a variety of reasons — but have still managed to stay in business.

It’s going to take a look at some of the challenges and excitement of the process.

Yesterday afternoon, I was on hand as owner Jackie Golabek and manager Karen Ringen were in the midst of packing up the wonderful (and often fragile) wares long featured at Whimsies Incognito in Tarrytown.

They will be moving — with a tentative opening date of 2nd week in March — into a space in the Junior League building up on South Broadway.

Here is my friend and colleague Mike Roy in action, capturing part of the moving process:

And there’s plenty of stuff still to be packed:

Jackie’s been getting the word out about the relocation for awhile now — customers are being told and a huge mailing will coincide with the opening.

For now, the windows say it all:

The shop’s still open as they pack — the more you buy, the less they have to carry.

But look out for the new place, at 35 S. Broadway (still at 914-631-3355) in coming weeks.

And til then, stop by to say goodbye to the ol’ space at 52 Main St.:

And I’m following this piece in particular — it’s the counter/cash register area, made out of the garage doors of Jackie’s grandfather’s house… yes, it’s making the move, too:

Today, I had the chance to stop by the new Unique Boutique in Nyack, which is marking its grand opening at 142 Main St.:

It’s one of the streetfront spaces in the Franklin Antique Center:

Gladys Foster, who runs the shop with her daughter, Dawn, made the move from a spot further down Main Street — and boy, have they made some nice changes.

The other shop, though fun, was crazy-crowded and narrow — the stuff was great but you had to be careful to navigate your way through.

This new space… wow — great displays, allowing more merchandise and new merchandise. There are select vintage pieces, with plenty of new things, including a wide variety of sweaters

You’ll have to check it out — the shop’s number is still 845-358-3230.
