Mary Shustack shops around

The new Whimsies

March
17

I’m just back from a trip over to Tarrytown to check out the new home of Whimsies Incognito.

The new, airy space at 35 S. Broadway marks owner Jacqueleen Golabek’s third home within Tarrytown — in 20 years.

She was five years at 8A Main St., followed by the last 15 at 52 Main St.

Now, she says, she’s begun “a new life on Broadway.”

Golabek and her staff opened the doors to the new Whimsies Incognito on Wednesday.

I’m working on a story for our Life & Style section (and here on LoHud.com) about the move — touching on other shops that have also moved — which should run later this month.

My colleague Mike Roy, a staff photographer here, and I had made one last visit to the old Whimsies last month, just as the packing was kicking into high gear.

So it was fun to see how it all turned out.

And I have to say I was amazed at how the “sensibility” of the place remains intact. Yes, it’s a new street, a new configuration, an airier space … but you still feel like you’re shopping in Whimsies.

There’s the old counter — which started out life as Golabek’s grandfather’s garage doors. It made the trip without incident. (You can see it below, with Golabek, on the left, speaking with customer Karen Maze of Irvington).

Here’s a quick tour of the place, which is still getting some final tweaks.

Whimsies customers will still find that charming clutter of goods — no minimalism here!

There are still all kinds of glass, ceramics and frames:

Great, unusual art:

Things hanging from high places:

Distinctive switchplates:

Cute accessories:

Its trademark selection of jewelry:

And a new display case (from the former Nikos jewelry shop in town):

And another new thing — a river view!

So be on the lookout for my story — and in the mean time,

stop by the new Whimsies Incognito at 35 S. Broadway. Call 914-631-3355.
