Inside ‘Outside’

Yesterday afternoon I was in Piermont, catching up with Joe Serra and Bill Walsh, the owners of The Outside In Piermont.
I’ve worked with the guys a few times since they opened back in 2007 — and I’m writing about them again, for a “secret-shop” feature for the June issue of our sister publication, Rockland Magazine.
I always love stopping by the place — the shop is hard to describe but once you go, you’ll never forget it.
It’s filled to the brim with one-of-a-kind finds from some 100 artists, mostly local and regional.
There are ceramic plates and artful dining tables, lamps and paintings, mugs and sculptures, necklaces and benches.
It somehow all works — all the diverse works simply complement each other and make for a unique shopping experience.
The space is designed as “a gallery of uncommon artifacts for the Inside & Out,” and right now, the warm-weather items are really coming into their own.
The greenhouse has plenty of succulent plants
I love how they’re all displayed among mosaic and glass pieces, even some stone sculptures:
There are ceramic stools and fountains, ideal for placing in a garden setting — or inside. This bird bath out front is by John Fazzino:
And I saw some other work that really caught my eye, including this lighting fixture by MetaForm Studio in Garnerville:
These really cool twig-themed benches from Mark Nimal:
This pie-safe from Bob Cooper, fashioned out of reclaimed barn wood:
And right out front, this dramatic and stunningly sleek bench by Cortlandt Manor furniture designer Dan Lehmeier, who I’ve featured before:
The shop has added a selection of jewelry, including sterling-silver pieces and these beach-glass creations:
In the “upper” level, which houses more furniture, lighting, sculpture and usually, an art exhibition — work by Paul Kostabi, an exhibit called “Flowers and Faces,” has recently opened.
Walsh and Serra were telling me they are really expanding, through both the number of artists they feature (the shop opened with “just” 23) — and in hosting special events.
They do receptions and wine tastings — but the space is also available for special-event rentals. They’ve even had inquiries about using it for a wedding reception.
And the rear greenhouse, a really airy space dotted with sculptures, benches and tables, will soon be hosting a figurative drawing class.
Kind of fitting, don’t you think?
Like I said, my story is set for the June issue of Rockland Magazine — but in the meantime, stop by and see what this shopping destination is all about.
