Style, for the home

If you’re finding your surroundings less than inspiring these days, there’s an easy way to get a giant dose of ideas.
The Architectural Digest Home Design Show has opened in Manhattan today and continues through Sunday at Pier 94.
I have a short advance running in today’s Life & Style section (and elsewhere here on LoHud.com) that puts the spotlight on the local participants in this prestigious event.
First up is Eric David Laxman of Valley Cottage, who I’ve worked with a few times over the years.
He’s an artist honored last week by the Rockland County Legislature, who’s known for both his sculpture and furniture designs.
I gave Laxman a call when I heard he was going to exhibit at this event, and he told me it would be his debut.
He’s reaching out to expand his audience, especially since the show attracts a number of New York-based designers.
Here’s one of his pieces, the Sogoni side table, that’s featured in his booth in the MADE section, a juried area devoted to one-of-a-kind and limited-edition work.
Laxman told me he’s going to share his booth with Khader Himied, a lighting designer whose MetaForm Studio is in the Garnerville industrial center (where Laxman’s based).
I saw some of Himied’s work just last week when I was at The Outside in Piermont.
A few of the show’s other participants with a local connection include Russel Wright Studios, which features the work of the famed industrial designer whose home studio, Manitoga, is in Garrison; and Green Design Furniture, a Portland, Maine-based company founded by Douglas Green, who grew up in Scarsdale.
The show, of course, features hundreds of exhibitors along with design consultations, seminars and demonstrations. Check out the site, linked above, for the full special-event schedule.
It’s open to 6 p.m. today, and again from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday.
Admission is $25.
