I’ve got mail

May
21

I’m decidedly old-school when it comes to mail… so much that I hate the term “snail mail.”

There’s just an elegance, a romance to good, old-fashioned letters.

I love writing them. I love receiving them.

Same goes for things like magazines and postcards… and I don’t even groan all that much with junk mail. It just makes for a bigger pile to dive into, hoping for something exciting to turn up.

Awhile ago, I was contacted by a woman named Anna Knoebel. She’s the publisher and editor of Abe’s Penny along with her sister, Tess Knoebel. Anna’s a former managing editor of zingmagine, a contemporary art journal based in New York, while Tess is a designer.

Their new venture is billed as a “micro-magazine” —  here’s how Anna described it:

“Collectible and temporal, Abe’s Penny is like a flash card — quick to experience — and taps into a pre-email love of receiving mail. Each volume contains four postcards that subscribers receive one by one, once per week, for one month. Each postcard features an image and a few lines of text. The full set of four postcards is a full story. Our idea is to keep it short, simple and frequent.”

Intrigued by the concept, I agreed take a look at it, so for the past month, I’ve been a recipient of Abe’s Penny.

Today, my set was completed with my final postcard.

As promised, each postcard has featured a stark, evocative photograph, accompanied by what at first appears to be a random paragraph. However, you quickly realize each card continues a quirky story that has you awaiting the next part.

This set, volume 1.3, has featured photographs by Peter Bernard Killeen, with text by Eric Ledgin, inspired by those images.

Hard to put a finger on it — but it’s almost like you’ve just watched a short indie movie or had someone share an obscure memory.

All I know is, it was a fun glimpse (and I’ll actually miss those little cards arriving every so often).

For more about this unusual project, which is based in Brooklyn, or to subscribe ($48 for six months), visit Abe’s Penny online.
