Storming Saturday…

May
21

I’ve been keeping a close check on the weather reports.

I’m all set to make my first trek up to the Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market on Saturday.

Have you ever been?

The show is an institution among those who like to hunt for antiques and collectibles. It got its start back in 1970, and I’ve been going up at least three or four times a year for nearly a decade.

It’s a place to find vintage treasures including furniture, costume jewelry, linens, glassware, art, postcards, advertising pieces — and all kinds of collectibles (character drinking glasses, movie memorabilia and the like).

There is also an extensive section devoted to new merchandise, from socks to pocketbooks, kitchen gadgets to crafts.

Some days are, to be sure, better than others, but I have never felt like the drive up to Dutchess County for the show is a wasted trip.

After all, that’s the fun of the hunt — what will be there filling the booths of some 600 dealers?

The old airport grounds are easily walked; spend as much time (or as little) as you like.

The show is held seven times a year. Season-opening is always a single-day sale in April, but it’s thought that the strongest shows are when they are two-day affairs.

This year’s schedule continues Saturdy and Sunday, then continues July 4 and 5; Aug. 2; Sept. 5 and 6; Oct. 10 and 11; and the closer, “Christmas in November” on Nov. 1.

It’s dawn-to-dusk, rain or shine, with free parking and admission.

The airport is on Route 216, in Stormville.

Check out the Web site, linked above, for more details (including directions) — or call 845-221-6561, a line that’s usually operated just before show weekends.
