Hope you enjoyed the holiday weekend.
Did you do any shopping? I did… just a bit.
I went up to the Stormville Airport Antique Show & Flea Market on Saturday.
If you’ve not been before, this is a longtime Dutchess County attraction — a place to hunt for antiques, collectibles, tube socks and kettle corn since 1970.
On seven weekends (April through November), some 600 dealers and vendors take over the fields of the old airport grounds.
As I’ve said in the past, some editions are stronger than others. I’d have to say that while I had a really good time on Saturday, something felt a bit “off.”
Maybe it was the crowd — more people much earlier in the day. We got there just around 7:30, and the parking lot was already pretty packed.
With lots more people on the field early on (you usually don’t sense the crowds til around 11 or so), it made for a slower run-through and was a bit harder to navigate some of the booths.
Also, the layout seemed a bit different. The rows weren’t as long as I’ve seen them before; it seemed to spread out a bit more, and I didn’t see as many of the “regulars” in their usual spots.
Couldn’t quite put my finger on what was off, and when I ran into some people I know, they pretty much said the same thing.
Being a creature of habit, I just felt like something was a bit different this time around.
Still, I saw some great things even though I didn’t buy all that much.
I wonder if it was a bit of burnout, having just been to the famed markets of Brimfield, Mass., a couple of weeks ago — or more of just keeping an eye on funds this time around?
In the big picture, these are all just quibbles. I have to say it was definitely worth it —and I look forward to return trips there this year.
(The schedule continues July 4 and 5; Aug. 2; Sept. 5 and 6; Oct. 10 and 11; and then Nov. 1).
Here are a few pictures I snapped to give you a feel for what was on offer:
And of course, you can find all kinds of “characters:”
If you went to Stormville this past weekend, I’d love to hear your take on things.
