I have a fun story that’s set to run in the Life & Style section, and also here on LoHud.com, on Sunday.
The premise is that with the economy the way it is today, some people are finding their summer-travel plans have been dramatically scaled back.
We’re going to show you how to take a virtual tour of Europe — without leaving Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
Some of the things I’m mentioning in my European staycation:
Swing by Rue Des Crepes in Harrison for French fare served in a scene right out of Paris.
Or perhaps you’re more in the mood for something Italian?
Then head to Sun Valley Nursery in Ossining, where owner Vincenzo Bomba has supplemented his longtime plant-and-flower business with all kinds of Italian ceramics, from tables to serving pieces, to marble statues and more.
Something Spanish?
Take in a performance at the Spanish courtyard in Caramoor, in Katonah — or simply enjoy the environment before or after you tour the Rosen House museum that surrounds it.
A bit of England?
Notice all the British works that fill Boscobel in Garrison, such as this 1808 Benjamin West painting:
And cap a visit by attending a performance of the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, in residence each summer:
The story includes a lot more ideas — as well as a video (I’ll add the story and video links in coming days).
It was a fun project; let me know what places (or things you buy) that remind you of “distant lands.”
