Eco-friendly style

I recently received a tip about a shop worth visiting and finally had the chance to stop by.
Paper by Nature is an “eco-chic paper boutique” in Larchmont, pointed out to me by Janet Robinson and Barbara Truesdale, who own the fragrance and apothecary bar, Szent & Company, next door.
I visited Paper by Nature yesterday, and they were right (thanks, ladies).
I’ll be doing a story on the place to run in our Life & Style section and here on LoHud.com one day next week
In the mean time, I wanted to give you a bit of a sneak peek, in case you’ve not been before.
Paper by Nature is owned an operated by Maria Cisneros. She’s a visual artist from Pelham who has long specialized in collages and other kinds of work that incorporate flowers and natural elements.
For a number of years, Cisneros maintained a studio in the Media Loft in New Rochelle, where she worked and saw clients. She felt, though, her reach was limited to those longtime supporters and those familiar with the artistic community based in the complex.
She began to look for retail space to hold her consultations — Cisneros specializes in bridal-bouquet preservation, turning flowers into a one-of-a-kind keepsake of a paper-art collage — and found space on Palmer Avenue.
Soon enough, she was open (this was back in December) and shortly after began filling the space with not only her own work but all kinds of paper-based, earth-friendly items.
“I really believe in trying to have a really nice product that is reasonable — and stylish,” Cisneros says.
First, let’s look at what Cisneros makes, starting with her botanical mixed-media work (sorry for that glare):
and she sells digital prints of her other works:
She also offers her own line of casual jewelry which features real birch bark, paper and semi-precious stones (it’s hanging within this section, which also features some fun animals):
And did you see her evening bags, which feature paper accents? They start at $75:
And how cool is this lamp, made out of laminated paper and other natural elements?
Now for the rest of the shop, Cisneros specializes in stationery, from cards to invitations to wrapping paper.
She sells a number of “tree-free” cards, which means no trees were cut down to make them but rather they are created out of recycled materials. Then, there are the “plantable” items, such as the ones selling for $2.95.
“You plant them and you get North American-wildflower gardens out of it,” she says.
There are journals and scrapbooks made from a women’s collective in Nepal, where proceeds benefit those who create the work.
“It supports Fair Trade,” Cisneros says.
She also has a number of bags from the Lenore Collection in San Francisco, a selection of hand-woven handbags made from recycled newspapers and magazines. These range from $26 for a clutch to up to around $95 for a large tote.
Another line features these silvertone sterling-silver earrings with beads made out of newspaper strips ($14)
and another uses comics to create these chunky necklaces ($22), bracelets and earrings ($7):
And aren’t these fashion-oriented totes really attractive?
They are covered with recycled magazine pictures — yet another example of Cisneros’ “mission.”
She was telling me that more and more, people are realizing that being eco-minded doesn’t have to mean dull creations in burlap and the like.
Sure, she says, going green is not a new concept; it’s that people are applying more creativity to it.
“It just seems like it was always here but this year in particular the opportunity to take it where you want to go is there,” Cisneros says.
Her stock more than proves that point.
“I want to carry things that people don’t have, (that) they can’t get everywhere,” she says.
Next up is the creation of her own line of eyeglass holders that will double as a necklace, “so people can wear them as jewelry but they’ll be functional jewelry.”
And those pieces, which will feature recycled paper — what else? — are just the latest example of what Cisneros hopes to do at Paper by Nature.
“I wanted to add some style to the products,” Cisneros says.
And here she is, on the left, talking with my friend and colleague Carucha Meuse, who photographed the shop for our print (and LoHud.com) story:
And finally, Cisneros outside the shop:
Paper by Nature is at 1969A Palmer Ave.

Hi John,
I just wanted to let you know that recycled paper jewelry sets are in my shop. They are necklaces & earrings which may be created with any type of paper, in any color tones that you request. We have some on hand now, but jewelry sets can be created out of any special paper such as newspaper articles, favorite book pages, etc….
Thank you for your comment. Regards, maria
